Dementia in WNC

Dementia is not a normal part of aging, but older people are more likely to develop dementia than younger individuals. Buncombe County is aging more rapidly than other NC counties, with a 31% increase in people 65-74 years old, a 106% increase in ages 75-84, and a 90% increase in ages 85+ expected by 2036.  This equals 4,500 people currently in Buncombe, and up to 9,000 people by 2050.

  • Over 56,000 caregivers provide care with little help.

Life does not end with a diagnosis of dementia. Many people living with dementia would love to remain active and engaged in their communities and in social activities
